How to Choose a Slab at a Stone Yard

Picking your own slab is one of the best parts of a countertop project. Here's what to know before you go.

1. Know Your Measurements

Bring rough measurements of your countertop area (length × depth). This helps the yard rep and your fabricator determine how many slabs you need. Most kitchen countertops require one to two full slabs depending on the layout. A standard granite slab is about 9–10 feet long and 5–6 feet wide. Use our countertop square footage calculator before you go.

2. Compare Materials Side by Side

Stone yards carry granite, quartz, marble, quartzite, and porcelain slabs. Each has different durability, maintenance, and price characteristics. Granite and quartzite are natural stones ideal for kitchens. Quartz is engineered and low-maintenance. Marble is stunning but requires sealing. Not sure which material is right? Read our quartz vs granite comparison or guide to countertops for Arizona's climate.

3. Check the Whole Slab

Natural stone varies from slab to slab. Don't pick based on a small sample — always view the full slab. Look for veining patterns, color consistency, and any natural fissures. Take photos in different lighting. Most yards will stand slabs upright so you can see the entire face. Try our AI room visualizer to preview how a color will look in your kitchen before you visit.

4. Tag It and Tell Your Fabricator

Once you pick your slab, the yard will tag or hold it. Tell them "Surprise Granite is my fabricator" so we can coordinate pickup. Then schedule your free estimate — we'll measure, template from your slab, fabricate, and install. One price covers everything.

Where can I see granite and quartz slabs in person near Phoenix?
Phoenix has several slab warehouses where you can browse full slabs in person. Our partners include MSI Surfaces (Roosevelt St), Arizona Tile (Tempe), Cosentino Center (Tempe), Daltile (Tempe), Cambria Gallery (Avondale), and more. We recommend calling ahead to check inventory and hours. Tell them "Surprise Granite is my fabricator" for seamless coordination.
Do I need an appointment to visit a stone yard?
Most stone yards are open to walk-ins during business hours. However, some specialty yards like Aracruz Granite and Architectural Surfaces operate by appointment only. Check each yard's hours on their profile page above. Large distributors like MSI and Arizona Tile welcome walk-in customers Mon-Sat.
How do I buy a slab from a stone yard?
Visit the yard, browse their inventory, and tag the slab you want. Tell them "Surprise Granite is my fabricator" — they'll hold the slab for us. Then schedule a free in-home estimate with us. We'll measure your space, template from the slab you chose, fabricate and install it. You pay one price for everything.
What's the difference between a stone yard and a fabricator?
A stone yard (distributor) sells raw stone slabs — they're the warehouse where you browse and pick your material. A fabricator (like Surprise Granite) cuts, polishes, and installs the stone. You visit the yard to choose, then your fabricator does the rest. Some companies do both, but separating these roles means you get the widest selection and the best craftsmanship.

How much do granite countertops cost in Phoenix?
Granite countertops in the Phoenix area typically range from $40 to $100+ per square foot installed, depending on the stone grade, edge profile, and layout complexity. Visiting a stone yard lets you compare price levels in person — basic granites start lower, while exotic quartzites and imported marbles cost more. At Surprise Granite, we offer transparent pricing that includes slab, fabrication, and installation in one quote. Schedule a free estimate to get an exact price for your project.
What should I look for when choosing a quartzite slab?
Quartzite is a natural stone prized for its hardness (harder than granite) and dramatic veining. When choosing a quartzite slab, check the entire face for color consistency — quartzite varies dramatically slab to slab. Ask the yard to wet the surface so you can see the color depth after sealing. Popular quartzites at Phoenix stone yards include Taj Mahal, Super White, and Calacatta quartzite. Quartzite needs periodic sealing but is extremely heat and scratch resistant, making it ideal for kitchens.
Can I visit a stone yard on weekends?
Yes — several Phoenix-area stone yards are open on Saturdays. MSI Surfaces (Saturday 8 AM–12 PM), Arizona Tile (Saturday 9 AM–4 PM), Daltile (Saturday 10 AM–3 PM), and Bolder Image Stone (Saturday 9 AM–1 PM) all welcome weekend visitors. Cambria, Cosentino, and most appointment-only yards are closed on weekends. We recommend calling ahead on Saturdays since hours can vary seasonally. Check each yard's profile page above for current hours.
What's the difference between quartz and quartzite countertops?
Despite the similar names, they're very different materials. Quartz (brands like Cambria, Silestone, Caesarstone) is an engineered stone — about 90% crushed quartz mixed with resin. It's non-porous, never needs sealing, and comes in consistent colors. Quartzite is a 100% natural stone formed from sandstone under heat and pressure. It has unique veining, needs periodic sealing, but is extremely hard and heat-resistant. You'll find both at most Phoenix stone yards. Quartz is great for low-maintenance kitchens; quartzite is for people who want the character of natural stone with superior durability.
